Illustrate 2012: March

Illustrate 2012: March

I’ve been doing a whole lot of illustration this month, as I’ve been working on wedding invitations for some friends of mine.  They’re all done, but so as not to steal their thunder, you’ll have to wait to see that illustration until after the invitations have been sent to the guests, and I post the finished product in the portfolio section of this site.  So while I was feeling a bit like that illustration should count for March, it’s probably good for me that I was forced to create something new for this project.

Spring has sprung a little earlier than usual here in Philadelphia, and as a result, I currently have the most painfully beautiful daffodils growing in my backyard.  The kind I have are not the sturdy trumpet daffodils you often see in public landscaping.  The ones in my backyard are dainty and delicate, and the corona is a bright orange, while the petals are a perky yellow color.  I’ve always loved daffodils because they’re one of the first signals that Mother Nature is awakening from her wintry slumber and bringing new life.

I’ve also been increasingly inspired by traditional botanical illustration because of its intricacy.  Some of the illustrations just blow my mind in terms of detail.

So it only seemed fitting that this month’s illustration subject should be the daffodils in my backyard.  Coincidentally, I also happened to relocate my fine-tipped pen nib, so I was able to reflect their delicacy in my line.  It all worked out quite nicely, as you can see below.

In honor of Edward Gorey’s birthday, which was yesterday, I finished my illustration for February.  I had planned different subject material–something about cupid being stuck in the strings of a harp–but because I missed Valentine’s Day (I’m not really a fan.) and because I received some sad news yesterday, I decided to switch it up.  Instead, I give you the following.

I’m dedicating this month’s illustration to my friend, Lenore, who I’ve been thinking a lot about in the last 24 hours, and who could use a little extra love and good energy.  I’m titling this oneLenore Receives a Gift from the Great Mother Beech.

Looking at the little girl, I’m clearly still feeling a little Goreyesque this month.  Somebody stop me when I grow a beard and break out the furs.

I have a cat problem in my neighborhood.  Or rather, I have a human problem that has caused an abundance of feral cats in my neighborhood.  You see, my neighbor has set up a kind of a cat hotel on his front porch.  He doesn’t do the responsible thing and make sure the cats are spayed or neutered, but he provides shelter and food for them.  As a result, we have a feral cat problem in my neighborhood.  They regularly defecate in my vegetable garden beds and my front yard.  It’s not as bad as it was a couple of years ago, when the front of my house smelled like the barn I grew up down the street from, but believe you me, it’s still bad.  Very bad.

I used to love cats.  I even subscribed to Cat Fancy magazine in middle school.  But now I have come to loathe them, and I am not the least bit sad when my German Shepherd catches one in the backyard.  Really.  I still like other people’s cats (okay, except maybe Elsa, who’s just plain ornery), but the feral cats need to go.

Tangentially related, I have launched a project for 2012.  Inspired by TubaDan’s song-a-month project in 2011, I have decided to complete an illustration a month for 2012.  My plan is to do all the illustrations in pen and ink on high-quality watercolor paper.  I have managed to get the first month in just under the wire, and I feel like it needs a bit of explanation.  But first, here it is.
